It is cold and flu season and sometimes eating right and exercising and getting plenty of rest just aren’t enough to fight of a cough or cold. When I am feeling the onset of a cold, and before I turn to the medicine cabinet or plan a visit to the doctor, I prepare a batch of homemade cough syrup. This recipe is packed with immune boosting ingredients that will help shorten the duration and alleviate the symptoms of a cough or cold.
Coconut Oil: As we know, coconut oil has many attributes. When this oil is digested, it forms monolaurin, a monoglyceride, which can kill harmful pathogens within the body. For more uses of coconut oil, click here!
Fresh Lemon: This small yellow super food is packed with several vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C is one specifically found within a lemon. The body uses Vitamin C to make collagen (helps heal wounds) and boost your immune system. Flavonoids (originally known as Vitamin P) are also found in lemons, and they work to enhance the power of Vitamin C, which helps get you back on your feet sooner..
Raw Honey: Multiple studies have shown that honey is not just a sweet treat! It is just as effective as over the counter cough medicine in helping fight a cough or cold. Honey contains powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Honey even aids in strengthening white blood cells which also fight bacterial and viral diseases. For best results, use raw honey that is not heat treated, heat treating can neutralize the beneficial nutrients and enzymes.
Cinnamon: This common spice has health benefits. In fact, cinnamon contains anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that cinnamon may help stop the destructive process of multiple sclerosis (MS) and can help slow down the process of Alzheimer’s or inhibit the development of the disease altogether. Many recommend getting up to six grams of cinnamon per day; and it is yummy!
The following recipe is one of nature’s “medicines” that is quick and simply made from all natural ingredients.
